Sailfish are most active from January through April, when boats out of Los Suenos Marina average 15 to 30 bites and 10 to 20 releases on a good day. They are caught outside those months too. This guide covers the season, what a trip looks like, how catch and release works, what else you may hook, and how to book. For the full charter overview, see our sailfish fishing page.

Why Pacific Sailfish Are a Popular Target

Pacific sailfish are highly migratory fish that follow food through offshore waters. They are known for their speed, their tall sail-like dorsal fin, long powerful runs, and the jumps and tail-walking that make a hooked fish easy to watch. That mix suits both experienced offshore anglers and guests on their first sport fishing trip.

Sailfish also tend to travel in schools, so double and triple hookups are common and the whole group stays busy. When a fish shows up in the spread, everything happens quickly, and the teamwork between captain, crew, and angler is a big part of the appeal.

Los Suenos is also home to the Los Suenos Triple Crown tournaments, which run from January through March, right in the middle of sailfish season. Book early if your dates overlap with the tournament window.

A Typical Day on the Water

We offer half-day (4 hours), full-day (8 hours), and multi-day charters, and the plan flexes with what we find offshore. Here is the general shape of a day leaving Los Suenos Marina:

  1. Check-in. We go over the boat, tackle, and bait at the marina and talk through the day's plan with you.

  2. The run offshore. We head toward the current lines and temperature breaks, usually 15 to 30 miles out, watching the water as we go.

  3. Setting the spread. The crew sets the trolling spread for sailfish based on bait activity and sea conditions.

  4. Raising a fish. We use the tease and switch method. Teasers raise a sailfish into the wake, then the crew pulls the teaser away and presents a rigged ballyhoo on a circle hook.

  5. The fight. The crew assists you with the rod and explains each step. On some days we also switch to live bait near reefs and current breaks.

  6. Heading home. We return to the marina once the planned fishing time is complete.

Offshore fishing depends on currents, bait and weather, so the strategy at sunrise may not be the one we are running by midday. For a closer look at the methods, read our Los Suenos sailfish charter guide.

Catch and Release Fishing for Sailfish

Sailfish are billfish, so the experience is built around the fight and the release rather than bringing a fish back to shore. Every sailfish on a Dream Boats CR trip is released alive. We fish with circle hooks, and the tease and switch method usually hooks the fish in the corner of the mouth, which makes the release quick and safe.

When a sailfish is hooked, the captain handles the boat while the crew helps you with the rod and the fish. They talk you through each step, which helps most if this is your first catch-and-release trip. Tell the crew before departure if you would like the process explained in advance.

Sailfish Only, or a Mixed Offshore Day?

Some anglers travel to Costa Rica for sailfish alone. Others want a broader day that could also include tuna, dorado, wahoo or marlin. Tell us which you prefer before departure and we will prepare accordingly, although the conditions decide what is actually available. Browse everything we target on our What We Catch page.

Yellowfin tuna

Biggest fish June to August, caught year-round

Dorado (mahi-mahi)

Peak September to November

Marlin

Wahoo

Grouper

Year-round, bottom fishing

Grouper is a different style of day altogether. It is reef and bottom fishing on volcanic structure rather than trolling offshore, so it suits groups who want a change of pace from billfish.

Our Boats, Tackle and Trolling

We fish sailfish from two Luhrs boats, each carrying up to 5 passengers, both powered by twin Cummins diesels:

Boat

Length

Cruising speed

Guests

Dream II (tournament open express)

32 ft

24 knots

Up to 5

Luhrs Express

36 ft

22 knots

Up to 5

See both boats and ask about rates on our boats page. We prepare the main fishing equipment before departure, including premium Shimano, St. Croix, and Fin-Nor tackle, so you can focus on the fishing.

Trolling is the standard way to find sailfish offshore. It lets the boat cover water while baits and lures are presented to fish moving through the area, and the crew changes the spread as conditions change. You can watch how boat speed, bait presentation, water conditions and fish behavior work together, and ask the crew questions as you go.

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses

  • Non-slip, closed footwear

  • Your fishing license, if you already have one. If not, ask us before departure

  • Personal essentials for the day, plus a camera for release photos

Be ready for strong sun and changing sea conditions, and for an active day when the fish are biting. After your trip you can request a fishing certificate for your catch, and the photo gallery shows what a day on the boat looks like.

What Guests Say

One guest called their trip the best Costa Rica fishing vacation they had ever taken and thanked the crew for a billfish grand slam. A group of six friends told us the captain made them feel safe all day, and that after catching billfish early, they followed the dolphins to a tuna school and landed more than ten fish.
